The Highchair and Solid Foods

Ava started on solid foods this week :) Jeremy and I wanted to wait until she was six months old before we introduced her to vegetables, fruits, and meats. We got an early start on rice cereal and oatmeal because of a spit up problem, but she has remained on a strict formula diet until now.

I read several books before starting her on solid foods. Apparently there are differing opinions on how to introduce solids foods. Some say to start with yellow vegetables, then move on to orange, and then green. Several of my books say that there is no scientific research to prove that that method is best. Ava's doctor also said that she did not have a preference for which ones we introduced first as long as we fed it to her for 2-3 days to make sure that she does not have a reaction.

So, that left us to make the decision. We decided to go the old fashioned route and introduce vegetables by color. But first, Jeremy had to build the high chair:

Ta-da!! All finished!
We started with sweet potatoes. She ate them for two days and then we moved on to squash, and then carrots. She has LOVED every flavor that she has tried! She loved squash the best. When I dropped some onto her high chair tray, she put her face down on it and sucked it off the tray! It was a cute moment!

This is her very first bite of solid food.

This is several bites later. She has acquired quite a mess around her mouth! Mommy's technique will improve as time goes on, but we have had so much fun this week!

Up next:

Corn Casserole
English Peas
Green Beans

There are some vegetables that do not come in the brands of baby food that we use (Beech Nut and Earth's Best Organic) so I will make those at home. I really want to teach her how to have a taste for everything. We want her to be healthy and so we both feel that we are on the right track. We will hold off on all "junk" food for as long as possible. :)
